Primary School

The Akaki Primary School is located at the south part of the village, next to the church of Metamorphosis Soteros, on Andreas and Michalakis Papathomas Street, which was named to honour the two brothers of the community who went missing during the Turkish invasion of 1974.

The school operated for the first time during the school year 1922 -23 and it was housed in a beautiful Classical Building which consisted of three classrooms and an office. The building had been built using stone from the nearby river and sandstone which used to be transferred from neighbouring villages. The first teacher of the school was Mattheos Mavrommatis from Akaki. Next, three more classrooms were built at the Northern Annex. In fact, the population growth in the community, as well as the settling of several refugees from the neighboring villages after the Turkish invasion led to the constant expansion of the schools premises.

In 2006 the school grounds were upgraded so that the premises could meet the needs of a modern school. The Western Annex was built and the large playing field gave its place to the events hall, the central paved yard, the outdoor event stage and the car park. Since then, the Primary School has been operating with 12 classrooms, 3 Special Education classrooms, 5 special labs, an Events Hall, a Staff Room, 4 offices, an infirmary, a canteen and various subsidiary areas linked with corridors, verandas and staircases. West of the school there is a large court used for Physical Education classes. Finally, the school grounds also include greenery areas featuring trees and bushes, a flower garden and a botanic garden with Cypriot aroma plants.

Today the school operates with 12 forms and is attended by 193 children, including Greek Cypriots and children from other countries. Also operating is a Special Unit with children from other communities. The school’s primary objective is to provide students with all necessary knowledge and skills so that they can succeed in modern society, as well as to cultivate proper stance and values such as Respect, Cooperation, Solidarity and Mutual Acceptance. To achieve that, Educational programs such as “Eco Schools”, “e-twinning”, “CLILL”, “Health Education and Prevention of Delinquent Behaviour” are applied, thus promoting critical thinking, creativity and citizenship.

The Akaki Primary School has guided thousands of children towards achieving progress and success for more than 90 years. Today, it continues to be an institution promoting learning and education within the community, thus leading children to the acquisition of knowledge and virtue.
